Dementia Australia is the number one stop for all families and friends of people with dementia looking for support in their carer role. To support family and professional carers we have a Dementia Advice Line 1800 180 023, Dementia Workshops and Australia wide Carer Support Groups.
What is a Dementia Australia Support Group?
A Dementia Australia Support Group is an informal gathering of people who share similar experiences, situations or concerns, especially pertaining to caring for a loved one with dementia. By meeting together, group members are able to offer each other emotional and practical support. Most Dementia Australia Support Groups meet once a month at a regular time. These groups are coordinated by our professionally trained staff, who organise the date, time and venue.
A Dementia Support Group meeting may include:
- Information about Alzheimer's disease and other dementia related illnesses
- Group discussions
- Sharing experiences and practical tips and advice on living with or caring for someone with dementia
- Relevant information and educational sessions given by guest speakers and/or videos
- Some support groups have an occasional social outing
- Sharing a cup of tea/coffee
